On the eve of his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is directly connected to delivering trophies.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. Yet, that first major trophy stands as his only top-tier trophy following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded upon being asked about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And numerous factors must occur in the next few months as well to earn the right.”

He will mark the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal met immediately following his role was made public.

The Current Landscape

With chasing Manchester City playing against West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes notwithstanding Arteta managing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.

He currently has a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that success is required in the immediate future.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, stressing the constant necessity to justify his role. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He added, praising the strong backing from the club's ownership, but pinpointing the players' commitment as paramount. “At the end, the critical component are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give the maximum to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

Arsenal heads into the upcoming game managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a muscle problem that is expected to sideline him for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Regardless of the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “priorities and messaging” are completely changed from when he began his reign.

He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
